Reed Wilson, a 14-year-old singer from Alabama America’s Got Talent Onstage, his nervousness was palpable.
But as she launched into a rendition of Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit, “You Don’t Own Me,” any nervousness vanished, revealing a powerful voice and captivating presence that wowed the judges and audience.
“I’m definitely nervous, but I’m going to give it my all, sing my heart out and try not to miss a single note,” Wilson declared before his performance. And he delivered!
His soulful and powerful rendition of classical songs not only demonstrated his incredible vocal range, but also his ability to put heart into every note.
The judges were clearly amazed by Wilson’s unexpected song choice and undeniable talent.
Simon Cowell was forced to admit that he was “unexpected.” Heidi Klum was clearly impressed, saying, “I think you’re amazing. Your performance off the mic was amazing.” [the stand] I also have a bit more stage presence now. Well done.”
Simon added that his parents must have good taste in music, to which Reid replied, “No,” drawing laughter from the judges and audience.
Sofia Vergara, who was initially worried about Wilson’s nerves, was thoroughly impressed: “He was super nervous at first. I was like, ‘He’s not going to be able to get his act together,’ and then you did it. And you did it amazingly well. It sounds amazing from here.”
But it was Howie Mandel who had the most profound reaction to Wilson’s performance.
Mandel was visibly moved and said, “I was blown away and blown away. That stage is where dreams come true. Do you believe in dreams?”
When Wilson answered in the affirmative, Howie pressed the golden buzzer, and glittering confetti rained down on Wilson and his proud mother, who ran onto the stage to embrace her son in a moment of pure joy.
Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” was a bold choice for the young singer.
The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964 and has been a feminist anthem for decades. Written by John Madara and David White, it showcased Gore’s powerful voice and became one of her signature hits.
Already famous for her hit “It’s My Party,” Gore was just 17 when she recorded “You Don’t Own Me,” which later appeared on her album. Lesley Gore sings of mixed hearts.
Behind the scenes, Mandel continued to praise Wilson’s incredible talent.
“I did it because I liked the sound. You were far from what I expected. You’re an incredible talent,” he told the young singer, who had not yet grasped this life-changing moment.
Wilson’s musical hero is none other than the legendary Aretha Franklin, so for her this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
“I’d love to be the next superstar,” he confessed. “I sing occasionally at family gatherings, but nothing major.”
Now, with a golden buzzer and tickets to the live show in hand, Wilson has a chance to make that dream a reality.
