Jason Kelce says he’s focusing on losing weight for the sake of his kids.
In an interview with GQ published last Wednesday, the former Philadelphia Eagles center explained how he stays healthy in retirement.
Kelce said he’s “almost lost 20 pounds right now” since retiring from the NFL in March and has a goal of losing another 20.
“It’s hard to imagine losing another 20 pounds, to be honest with you. But my back already feels better. My knees already feel better,” Kelce told GQ. “So, hopefully, another 20 pounds will make me even more able to play with my kids.”
Kelce has three daughters with his wife, Kylie Kelce.
He shared that he weighed 295 pounds for most of his NFL career and now weighs 277 pounds.
“I don’t want to get too small. I think a lot of players, especially offensive linemen, lose too much weight and then they look like bobbleheads because their necks get really small, but their heads stay the same size,” Kelce said.
He added that a weight range between 250 and 260 pounds seemed most appropriate to him, as it would help him maintain his stature.
“So for me, I feel like for some reason between 250 and 260, I feel like I’ll still be tall and be happy with the way I look without having a six pack,” did he declare.
Although he has suffered numerous injuries during his 13-year football career, Kelce said he won’t let them stop him from enjoying life.
“I had my right knee reconstructed twice, I had an operation on my hand and my groin. I broke my toes. I’ve had my fair share of things gone wrong, not to mention the wear and tear from my 13 years of playing in the NFL,” Kelce said. “So I’m leaving the game with these scars, but for all intents and purposes I can play with my kids. I’m still able to enjoy life to the fullest, which I consider a blessing, whether you played in the NFL or not. »
This is not the first time he has spoken about his desire to lose a few pounds during his retirement.
During an April episode of his “New Heights” podcast with guest Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelce shared some details about his fitness goals.
“My goal is to lose one kilo per week. I want to lose weight, but I want to maintain my muscle mass,” Kelce said. “I try to watch my protein, carbohydrate and fat intake and make sure I’m at least two pounds per body weight. »
Schwarzenegger then gave Kelce a piece of advice: “The most important thing is to slowly decrease body fat and increase body muscle. Just change. It doesn’t just have to do with weight,” he said. -he declares.
In a June 2023 interview with Sports Illustrated’s Eagles Today, Kelce shared that his NFL diet wasn’t as strict as one might think.
“I think you have to be smart and do things in a way that you get the right amount of protein,” Kelce said. “Once you understand that, you don’t really need to stick to it. »
He added that he ate whatever he wanted.
“I can go to McDonald’s and eat food that I can understand. I can go to Wawa, look at the menu and decide what I want to get. I don’t need to eat brown rice with flavorless chicken breast. If that’s what’s required of me to play in the NFL, I probably wouldn’t do it,” he said.
