Local 4 gets you on the road before the busiest travel day begins before the Fourth of July.
Wednesday, July 3 and Sunday, July 7, 2024 are the busiest days for travel as millions of Michiganders prepare to hit the road. If you’re heading out on a trip, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is offering her help.
AAA estimates that nearly three million Michiganders will travel for the holidays. The good news is that you won’t see many orange cones on Wednesday.
People everywhere are preparing to travel for the holidays, like Bob Fines, who bought fireworks Tuesday and was ready to hit the road Wednesday morning.
“I go to Indiana,” Fines said. “We usually try to leave around 2 a.m., to get through the traffic.”
Fines isn’t the only one traveling out of state. Wednesday is expected to be the busiest day of the week, both on the road and in the air.
“There will be people out there,” said Alec Slatky, a spokesman for AAA. “Make sure you’re prepared for delays no matter where you are.”
“As a national agency, we’re going to do it this summer,” said TSA Federal Security Director Christopher Murgia.
July 7 is also expected to be another busy day for travel as Michiganders head home. As a result, Whitmer is working to make road travel easier by removing most of the orange barrels on nearly 60% of the roads.
That might help Mike Shookman, who is reluctant to make the 10-hour trip to New York with his two daughters.
“My in-laws are in New York, so the question is, ‘How badly do I want to see them?’” Shookman said. “Then again, it begs the question, ‘How can I inconvenience my in-laws?’ If I can get them a ticket from New York City, that would be great. The girls would love to have fireworks in the city. New York is a great place for the Fourth of July, so we’ll take all that with us if we can.”
As more people have the option to work remotely, you can expect people to leave earlier in the week. Remember to give yourself plenty of time and stay safe.
