- Major Democratic donor John Morgan said Biden had placed “misplaced trust” in his top aides.
- Morgan said Biden must eliminate his “cabal,” which includes Anita Dunn and Bob Bauer.
- He joins the camp of Biden supporters who have blamed his aides for his poor televised debate.
Democratic megadonor John Morgan has joined the camp of those pointing the finger at President Joe Biden’s top aides for his poor performance in the debates.
In an interview with Politico, Morgan said he believes the president has a “cabal” of his closest associates. That group includes Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn, her husband, Biden’s personal attorney Bob Bauer, and Biden’s former chief of staff Ron Klain.
“I think he misplaced his trust in all three of those people, and I think that’s been the case from the beginning,” Morgan told Politico.
Morgan also took to X on Sunday to express his displeasure with the assistants.
“Biden has been deceived for too long by the worth of Anita Dunn and her husband. They must go… TODAY,” he wrote.
He added: “The scam is gross. It is a political mistake.”
Morgan, who founded the law firm Morgan & Morgan, donated at least $355,000 to Biden’s 2020 campaign and helped raise about $1.7 million for it thanks to a fundraiser at his home.
Morgan echoes the sentiments of some members of the Biden family, who behind closed doors have argued that aides should be demoted or fired, according to Politico.
Three anonymous sources said Policy that the Biden family resented those three top aides — all of whom helped prepare Biden for CNN’s primetime debate — for not preparing him well enough to go on the offensive.
Despite growing criticism from her party and donors, the Biden-Harris campaign raised $127 million in June, including $38 million after Thursday’s debate.
From April to June, his campaign raised $264 million. However, Trump’s campaign has outperformed Biden’s, amassing a war chest of $331 million by the second quarter of 2024, according to Bloomberg.
Despite the positive fundraising spike, donors were spooked after the debate and remain uncertain about Biden’s ability to secure a victory in 2024.
Whitney Tilson, another longtime Democratic donor, said in a post on X on Saturday that he felt “cheated” by Biden’s performance.
“If the man I saw at the debate is the real Joe Biden of today, then it would be a waste of time and money to support him, because he has almost no chance of beating Trump,” Tilson wrote.
Morgan and Biden representatives did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment sent outside of normal business hours.
