This Independence Day weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation is removing lane restrictions on 60% of its road and bridge projects to reduce traffic delays for an expected record number of holiday travelers.
Starting at 3 p.m. today and ending at 6 a.m. Monday, 105 of the 174 projects statewide will have their lane restrictions removed. However, drivers are advised that equipment and some traffic patterns will remain in place, such as temporary lane changes or shoulder closures.
In Kingsford, Carpenter Avenue at the intersection of Woodward Avenue will have one lane open in each direction with a traffic change. The same is true for US 41/M-28 in Ishpeming where there will be a traffic change at Lakeshore Drive. Detours will be provided for side streets.

AAA estimates that more than 2.6 million Michigan residents will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend, a record for the second year in a row. About 1.4 million people will travel on Wisconsin roads over the holiday weekend, another record expected, AAA said.
In Brown County, Wisconsin, Highway 172 is closed to traffic between Highway 54 in the village of Hobart and Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay. Traffic is being detoured via Highway 54 and I-41.
In Oneida County, Wisconsin, US 8 near Rhinelander is closed from Highway 17 North to Oneida County P. Traffic is being detoured via Oneida County P and Highway 17.
“Fasten your seat belt, drive sober and be courteous to other motorists,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said in a news release. “These simple measures can help save lives and prevent accidents.” he said.
