According to AAA, 70.9 million people will travel more than 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday.
That’s up about 5% from 2023, but travel app Hopper says Americans will spend 40% more on airfare this holiday season.
Regardless, AAA predicts that more Americans will travel through airports this year than last. It recommends arriving at the airport two hours early.
“Airports will be crowded throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving two hours early, reserving parking in advance and traveling with a carry-on bag rather than a checked bag to save time and money,” Aida Diaz, media relations manager, said in a press release.
The travel agency also recommends that drivers hit the road in the morning.
“Drivers in major metropolitan areas can expect the worst congestion on Wednesday, July 3, when leaving the city, and Sunday, July 7, when returning,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a press release. “Car trips during the holiday week could take up to 67 percent longer than usual. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations and traffic apps for real-time road conditions.”

Krystal Gibson, who is in Delray Beach for the holidays and an extra week, said she is from Knoxville. She came to town because it is a family tradition to use a timeshare in the area and she loves the beaches.
“It was very, very busy,” Gibson said of the beach. “I like the fact that they keep it clean. They keep it safe and that’s important to us.”
Tammy Billups, who was also at the beach, said she was from Richmond, Virginia. She said the beach was crowded, but it didn’t matter.
“The Fourth of July is always a big draw in Delray,” Billups said. “… I like the people. But if you don’t like the people, it can be a problem. But it’s all good.”
