AAA predicts that Independence Day travelers will set new records nationally and in Florida as the holiday ends this weekend. More than 70.9 million people in the United States are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home. Nearly 4.5 million of them will be Floridians.
“The summer travel season is off to a flying start and we expect to set new travel records on the road and in the air during Independence Day week,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “There will be 3.5 million more travelers than last year. That means even more people in airports and at popular attractions like beaches, lakes and theme parks.”
AAA’s Independence Day travel forecast measures domestic travel of 50 miles or more over a nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 through Sunday, July 7.
Road trips
AAA predicts that a record 60.6 million people will travel by car during the week of Independence Day, an increase of 2.8 million travelers over last year. This year’s figure also exceeds that of 2019, when 55.3 million people traveled by car during the week of July 4.
Meanwhile, car travel in Florida will set a record for the second year in a row. More than 3.9 million Floridians are expected to hit the road, up 183,000 from last year.
“Motorists should be prepared for afternoon and evening traffic congestion, especially near major metropolitan areas, theme parks and popular attractions,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “With so many people on the road, it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving and yield to those on the side of the road.”
Sunday is expected to be the busiest day for road travel.
Flight
Domestic air travel is also expected to hit a record high. Nationally, AAA predicts 5.74 million people will fly to their Fourth of July destinations. That’s up nearly 7% from last year and 12% from 2019.
AAA booking data shows that domestic airfares are 2% cheaper this Independence Day week than last year, with the average price of a domestic round-trip ticket at $800. Airports will be crowded throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking in advance, and traveling with a carry-on rather than a checked bag to save time and money.
Other modes of transport
More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other means of transport, including buses, cruises and trains. This category is up 9% from last year, but this year’s number is down from 2019’s figure of 4.79 million.
“The cruise industry continues to experience remarkable growth,” Haas said. “Alaska cruises are in high demand this time of year, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruisers are also finding great deals this summer. With new ships hitting the market — and their high price tags — working with a travel advisor is a great way to ensure you’re getting the best value for your vacation. Travel advisors can also help you choose a travel insurance policy that protects you and your investment from unexpected events before and during your trip.”
