LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Many people are returning to Kentucky after the holiday weekend, and Fourth of July travel was expected to be among the busiest, but returning travelers said they had a different experience.
While some travelers head to their vacation destination after a booming vacation, others return to the Bluegrass.
“We’re going to Deerfield Beach, Florida,” said Sophia Newman, who is heading to Florida for vacation.
“I just arrived this afternoon, left this morning at 7 o’clock,” said Keisha Zeigler, who is also traveling to Florida and arrived from Virginia.
“We’re from Huntington Beach, California, in Orange County. Then we’re taking my daughter to play soccer for the University of Kentucky,” said Andy Stewart, a California resident. “Then we flew through Dallas, then Dallas to here, so the flight was super easy. Super easy, quick.”
According to AAA, more than five million people are expected to travel by plane this week, while more than 60 million people are expected to drive to their destinations.
“It was good. I was on cruise control the whole way. Until I got over those mountains, you know. The cruise control seemed to speed it up,” Zeigler said.
“It wasn’t that bad actually. We live five minutes away from home, so it wasn’t that hard to get here,” Newman said.
A Blue Grass Airport employee said mornings were the busiest times compared to evenings, but fortunately there were no delays that forced anyone to change their schedules.
“It’s easy. As long as you book in advance, you’re fine,” says Monica Terry.
“No, no delays. Not a lot of people. It seemed very easy. The airports are not crowded,” Stewart says. “I land in Dallas. I go from one terminal to the other and I get on the little shuttle and I eat cake. I mean, both airports are not crowded.”
According to AAA, the worst time to travel by vehicle on Sunday, July 7 is between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. It’s best to leave before 11:00 a.m.
If you’re planning to return to the Commonwealth, don’t expect to be rushing to your gate.
