The condition of a U.S. citizen injured Sunday after the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fired missiles into northern Israel is “worsening,” according to the medical center treating him.
The 31-year-old man was injured by shrapnel in his upper body and was admitted to surgery on Sunday evening local time, the Galilee Medical Center said in a statement.
Two other people injured by the missile fire – a soldier and a civilian – were also hospitalized in a surgical ward, the center added.
Hezbollah fired dozens of projectiles and anti-tank missiles toward northern Israel on Sunday, the Israeli military said. The soldier was lightly injured and was evacuated for treatment.
The two civilians were hit by shrapnel, according to the medical center.
A spokesperson for the medical center earlier told CNN that the American civilian was in “serious and stable condition.”
“(He) was admitted to the shock room, where medical teams had to anesthetize him and put him on a ventilator,” the center added.
CNN has contacted the US State Department regarding the injured American.
The Israeli army said it responded by striking Hezbollah military structures.
Hezbollah said in several statements on Sunday that it had fired rockets at several Israeli military sites.
The statement comes after the Israeli military carried out an airstrike in northern Lebanon on Saturday, killing a senior Hezbollah official it said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
