State-owned electricity utility PT PLN will supply 8,978 megawatt hours (MWh) of green electricity to fashion company PT Fast Retailing Indonesia (Uniqlo) through its Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) service as part of efforts to help decarbonize the country’s industrial sector.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasojo said REC is PLN’s service to make it easier for customers to access new and renewable energy (EBT) in a transparent, accountable and globally recognised manner. Each REC certificate certifies that the electricity used comes from a renewable energy power plant.
“We appreciate Uniqlo’s commitment to utilise PLN’s green electricity to support the energy transition and sustainability of the domestic fashion industry. We are committed to providing the best green electricity services through REC,” Darmawan said in a statement, Tuesday (9/7).
He stressed that the utilisation of PLN RECs is key on the journey to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. PLN will continue to encourage various stakeholders to play an active role in realising carbon emission reductions through its REC services.
PLN Jakarta Metropolitan Distribution Division General Manager Rasilan also praised UNIQLO for using PLN’s green electricity in all its offices and tenants across Indonesia.
He said he hoped Uniqlo’s efforts would serve as an example for other companies to use green electricity.
“Uniqlo’s efforts demonstrate a strong awareness of the importance of clean energy and we hope more companies will follow suit,” Rasilan said.
Yulia Rahmawati, Uniqlo’s sustainability and corporate PR manager, said the company was encouraging the use of new renewable energy sources as part of its sustainability efforts.
