The Republican nominee sarcastically praised Biden for his “great decision” to appoint Vice President Kamala Harris.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has seized on the furor surrounding President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign to sarcastically praise the Democrats for picking his running mate as “insurance” against him being replaced.
Speaking to supporters in Miami, Florida, on Tuesday, Trump said Biden had made a “great decision” to name Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate to avoid challenges to his shaky candidacy.
“If Joe had picked someone half-competent, they would have fired him years ago. But they can’t do that because she has to be their No. 2,” the former president said, arguing that Democrats are in a “total breakdown” over who should be the nominee.
Trump also challenged Biden to either take part in another debate or play golf to “make up for” his poor performance in last month’s debate.
“Let’s have another debate this week so that sleepy Joe Biden can prove to the whole world that he has what it takes to be president, but this time it will be men-on-men, with no moderator, no restrictions, just a location whenever and wherever you choose,” he said.
Biden’s campaign argued that the president is busy leading the country and has no time to respond to Trump’s “bizarre behavior.”
“We asked Donald Trump to create jobs, and he lost 3 million. We asked Donald Trump to stand up to Putin, and he caved in to him,” said Biden campaign spokesman James Singer.
“We demand that Donald Trump follow the law, but he breaks the law.”
Biden and his team have been scrambling to allay doubts about his electability since the 81-year-old Democrat repeatedly stuttered and appeared to lose his train of thought during the Jan. 27 debate.
Democratic lawmakers met privately on Tuesday to discuss Biden’s campaign amid ongoing concerns about his mental and physical health.
While senior Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have reiterated their support for Biden, New Jersey Rep. Mickey Sherrill became the party’s seventh elected official to publicly call on Biden to resign.
Biden, who is trailing Trump in opinion polls nationally and in key battleground states, has repeatedly rejected calls for him to drop out of the race and it seems impossible for Democrats to oust him against his will.
Harris is seen as the leading candidate to replace Biden if he steps down, but she is not significantly ahead of Biden in opinion polls.
