Police found explosives in the vehicle of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man suspected of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
The FBI identified Crooks — who was shot dead by a Secret Service agent — as the shooter. A source familiar with the investigation told The Wall Street Journal that authorities found explosives in a car Cooks parked near the protest site on Saturday.
Police dispatched bomb technicians to the area after receiving reports of a suspicious package, the outlet reported. Authorities also found an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle next to Crooks’ body, according to The New York Times.
“Dozens” of law enforcement vehicles surrounded Crooks’ Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, home Saturday night after the shooting, according to USA Today. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the bomb squad were at the home, the report said.
Police searched the residence “late into the night” to clear and secure the area and conducted interviews with the Crooks family at the home, the WSJ reported.
Crooks’ neighbor, Dan Maloney, told USA Today that “it’s crazy that someone would do this,” adding that at one point he had planned to attend the rally.
The FBI did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment regarding the explosives found in Crooks’ vehicle.
