Indonesian President Joko Widodo begins a two-day state visit to the UAE on Tuesday and is due to hold high-level talks with Sheikh Mohammed.
According to state news agency Wam, the two leaders are expected to review efforts to strengthen strategic ties between the friendly countries across several key areas.
The discussions will centre around the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed between the two countries in July 2022, which is crucial to their joint efforts to promote sustainable development.
Sheikh Mohammed said at the time that the agreement would herald “a new era of expanded trade, investment and economic cooperation.”
The Head of State said the agreement would help further strengthen the long-standing ties between the two countries.
The agreement came into force in August 2023.
The UAE-Indonesia CEPA is projected to boost bilateral non-oil trade from $4.08 billion to more than $10 billion within five years of its implementation.
The agreement also aims to increase total trade in services between the two countries to $630 million by 2030. Going forward, more than 80 percent of the UAE’s exports to Indonesia will be exempt from tariffs.
President Joko Widodo is due to step down this year after completing his second and final term as president.
Green Vision
The UAE and Indonesia are also united in the fight to protect the planet.
In May, it was announced that construction had begun on a new mangrove research centre in Indonesia in collaboration with the UAE.
The Mohamed bin Zayed Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Centre will be built on 2.5 hectares of land in Bali’s Ngurah Rai Forest Park, with an investment of $10 million from the UAE.
The park is already home to more than 1,158 hectares of mangrove forest and the research centre was first announced at the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai last year.
“This project reflects the UAE’s commitment to protecting important ecosystems such as mangroves. [the country’s] “This is part of our efforts to mitigate climate change,” said Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the project.
“The centre will provide an ideal platform for scientists and researchers to join forces, exchange knowledge and improve our capacity to address current and future environmental challenges.”
Shared Values
The UAE and Indonesia have deep friendly relations and both countries are home to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Solo, Java, Indonesia, is named in honour of the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and was opened in November 2022 by President Sheikh Mohammed and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
Though smaller than the Abu Dhabi original, it bears a striking resemblance to the architectural marvel, with its striking white-and-gold decoration, four minarets, and a central dome surrounded by four smaller minarets.

How does Gen Alpha invest?
Mark Cherwan, co-founder and CEO of robo-advisory firm Salwa, predicts that Gen Alpha (those born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing as teenagers and take advantage of the benefits of compound interest.
“Whether it’s investing in a few clicks or schools and parents strengthening individual financial education skills, technology and education will be the main drivers to make this happen,” he added.
Chafwan said the younger generation has a higher risk-taking capacity, but some are cautious about investing because it is their first time. “Schools still don’t teach personal finance and stock market investing, so much of the learning process can feel daunting and intimidating,” he said.
He advises millennials not to necessarily start out with an aggressive portfolio, even if they can afford to take on risk: “We always advise them to gradually increase depending on their risk tolerance, so they can experience and get used to volatility. Equities are popular among the younger generation as they have a higher risk tolerance,” Chafwan says.
Highlighting the role of technology in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he said: “They’ve often been left out, but because of low account minimums… $1,000 customers are [Dh3,672] The money in their accounts is working for them just as much as the portfolios of high net worth individuals.”
