SGMC Health recognized Lindsey Hulsey with its July DAISY Award for Nursing Excellence. She was recognized for the compassionate and compassionate care she provides to patients and their families.
Halsey was nominated by a colleague in the palliative care department who witnessed the impact he has had on patients.
The recommendation reads, “Lindsay cared for the same patient over the course of two weeks. While caring for her, she talked to the patient about their lives and hobbies, and the patient shared many stories with her. She built a strong bond with the patient.”
Unfortunately, the patient’s prognosis was poor, and the patient and family decided to transition to palliative care alone. However, the patient appreciated Halsey’s care so much that they postponed palliative care until Halsey was working again and able to be with her during her final moments. The patient even asked Halsey to keep her family at her bedside.
His colleague said that Ms. Halsey never left his side, comforting him with a smile, administering his medications, tapering his oxygen and providing emotional support to his family. Thanks to Ms. Halsey’s care and attention, he passed away completely peacefully within a few hours. Ms. Halsey said she was very generous and that other team members took on the care of other patients so she could focus on him.
SGMC Health continues to ask patients and colleagues to recognize nurses who they feel have gone above and beyond expectations in their behavior and care. Nominations are reviewed by a committee based on criteria such as compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, skills and knowledge.
The DAISY Awards are presented monthly in front of nursing colleagues, physicians, patients and visitors. Each recipient receives a certificate of recognition as an “Outstanding Nurse.” They also receive a beautiful sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by an artist from the Shona tribe of Africa. A special daisy floral arrangement was donated by The Flower Gallery, SGMC Health’s local sponsor of the DAISY Awards.
