Located in the heart of Southeast Asia, Laos captivates travellers with its tranquil landscapes, vibrant cultural heritage and warm hospitality. It’s a popular destination for leisure travellers and world-lovers alike. Visitors can explore UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the ancient temples of Luang Prabang, immerse themselves in bustling night markets and take part in traditional Buddhist ceremonies. The capital, Vientiane, blends French colonial architecture with Buddhist landmarks such as the iconic Pha That Luang.
Neighbouring countries such as Thailand, China and Vietnam send the most international tourists to Laos, attracted by their closeness and deep cultural ties, and there are also significant numbers of French tourists, reflecting Laos’ historical ties to the country dating back to colonial times.
Anup Kumar Keshan, Editor-in-Chief, TTW said: “The implementation of Laos’ visa-free policy for 15 countries, including Schengen countries, has been a transformative force in the tourism industry. This strategic move has not only simplified the entry procedures for millions of people, but also broadened Laos’ appeal across various travel sectors. Furthermore, the policy has stimulated niche travel markets such as culinary tourism, adventure travel and wellness retreats, enriching the travel experience and stimulating significant economic growth and cultural exchange.”
Laos expands visa policies and special economic zones to boost tourism and investment:
Laos recently expanded its visa policy, now giving visitors from 22 countries the opportunity to obtain multiple-entry visas valid for up to 60 days per stay until December 31, 2024. This update marks a major shift from the previous single-entry visa, which only allowed stays of up to 30 days.
Additionally, Laos has established special economic zones (SEZs) in places such as Savannakhet and Vientiane, where visa and business regulations are relaxed to stimulate investment and promote tourism development in the country.
Laos also has facilitated land border crossings with neighboring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and China. Travelers should check entry requirements and border crossing points in advance to ensure smooth travel planning and regulatory compliance.
Laos’ proactive visa policy and SEZ initiatives make the country an attractive destination for leisure and business travelers seeking unique cultural experiences and investment opportunities in Southeast Asia.
