JAKARTA, July 17 (Bernama Antara) – Indonesia and Canada agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on intellectual property during the 65th meeting of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Assembly of Member States held in Geneva, Switzerland on July 15.
Indonesia’s Intellectual Property Director General Min Usihen stressed the importance of building and maintaining cooperation on intellectual property with developed countries such as Canada, including the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).
“Such cooperation is crucial for Indonesia in strengthening its intellectual property protection infrastructure and mechanisms,” Usihen said during the meeting with CIPO, quoted in a statement released by his office on Wednesday.
Usihen said he was keen to receive technical assistance and exchange memorandums of understanding with CIPO to effectively create, protect and exploit intellectual property in Indonesia, ANTARA reported.
She then highlighted the Indonesian Intellectual Property Academy (IIPA), an institution established with the support of WIPO to help Indonesia develop a genuine talent base for handling intellectual property-related issues.
In that regard, the official said he hopes CIPO will assist IIPA in applying international standards, bringing tangible benefits to all stakeholders across Indonesia.
During the bilateral meeting, Usihen also briefed CIPO representatives on the significant progress Indonesia has made in managing intellectual property.
In this regard, she pointed out that Indonesia is a party to international regulations such as the Madrid Protocol, the Marrakesh Treaty, the Beijing Convention, the Nice Agreement and the Budapest Convention.
Indonesia also said it has implemented national regulations on copyright, patents, trademarks and joint intellectual property rights related to genetic resources, traditional knowledge and expressions of traditional culture.
Ushihen then attributed advances in intellectual property management to the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and blockchain.
“But these technologies also create entirely new challenges that require international cooperation to overcome effectively,” she added.
