“As far as we know, there were no injuries or wounds,” the church’s pastor said.
A restoration company remains at the site of a historic Baptist church in Dallas where a massive fire broke out Friday, destroying much of the building. As of Saturday morning, the blaze had been contained and put under control.
First Baptist Dallas is a Baptist church dating back to 1890 in Dallas, Texas.
No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the fire.
“A large part of the building has collapsed, creating many cavities and ‘hot spots’. There are no signs of the fire spreading, but [Dallas Fire Rescue] “Firefighters will remain on scene for an extended period of time to extinguish all remaining areas of fire and ensure safety around the unstable structure,” the city of Dallas told ABC News in a statement Saturday.
As of Saturday, the fire remained contained to Chapel No. 2. Fire officials are maintaining a safety zone around the building, but no major evacuations have been conducted, the fire department said.
Firefighters received the first call about the blaze at 6pm local time on Friday, and when they arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke, according to Broadcastify.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
“We are grateful that no one was injured today and thankful to the emergency responders who helped contain the fire in our historic sanctuary. They continue to work, but the main fire has been extinguished. Regardless, we plan to gather in church this Sunday,” the church’s pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffries, tweeted late Friday.
