JakartaThe United States is expected to remain Indonesia’s main export market for seafood and fish products in the first half of 2024, with a value of $889.39 million.
With total fish and fishery product exports reaching $2.71 billion during the same period, the United States accounted for 32.8% of Indonesia’s export market, followed by China (20.5%), ASEAN countries (13%), Japan (10.5%) and the European Union (7.1%).
Budi Suristyo, head of the Marine and Fisheries Competitiveness Agency at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), reported that Indonesia’s seafood exports will reach $2.71 billion in the first half of 2024, up about 1 percent from $2.69 billion in the same period in 2023. The performance represents about 37.64 percent of this year’s annual export target of $7.2 billion.
“The United States remains the main destination for Indonesia’s seafood exports. Although we have only achieved 37.64% of our target for the first half of 2024, we are optimistic about reaching the $7.2 billion target. We will continue our promotional activities, especially since Indonesia recently received a temporary exemption from anti-subsidy tariffs on frozen shrimp exports to the United States,” said Budi.
Leading export items during the period were shrimp at $755.79 million (27.8 percent), tuna, bonito and mackerel at $456.64 million (16.8 percent), squid, cuttlefish and octopus at $396.94 million (14.6 percent), crab and lobster at $275.15 million (10.1 percent) and seaweed at $162.38 million (6 percent). “Shrimp remains the main export item from the country’s marine and fisheries sector from January to June 2024,” Budi said at a press conference on KKP’s performance in Jakarta on Friday.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s imports of fish and seafood products in the first half of 2024 totaled $219.54 million, accounting for 8.09 percent of exports, down 35.15 percent year-on-year. “This solidifies Indonesia’s position as a net exporter of seafood products,” Budi explained.
In the first half of 2024, the trade balance for seafood and aquatic products recorded a surplus of $2.49 billion (Rp 40.67 trillion), up 6.2 percent compared to the same period in 2023.
