The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is temporarily halting road construction to help keep Labor Day travelers on the roads, but it’s up to drivers to stay safe this weekend. “Let’s continue to work together to make our roads safer and avoid bad driving habits,” said Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson, who made the announcement. Thompson said that includes obeying the speed limit, wearing your seat belt and putting down your cell phone.
Triple A said peak travel times will be from 1pm to 7.30pm today, 2pm to 6pm on Friday and 11am to 8pm on Monday.
Road construction is suspended, but traffic will still have fewer lanes open in work zones and will need to navigate construction barricades and barrels. In eastern Wisconsin, I-41 is experiencing major construction in Outagamie and Winnebago Counties, and I-43 has numerous lane and ramp closures in Ozaukee and Milwaukee Counties. These are just a few examples, so before you travel, we recommend checking the Wisconsin 511 website linked to this WHBL.com article for routes.
DOT added that all rest stops in Wisconsin are open, extra patrols are on the roads during the “Drink and Drive, Get Busted” campaign, and DOT safety patrols sponsored by Geico are providing limited roadside assistance to drivers in distress in certain coverage areas across the state.
