PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — A man suspected of killing a woman in New Hampshire was shot and killed by police on a bridge connecting the state and Maine, authorities said Thursday. An 8-year-old child was found shot to death in his car.
The Piscataqua River Bridge on Interstate 95 reopened Thursday morning after being closed for about seven hours, according to Maine State Police. Traffic was backed up in both directions as drivers were detoured to two other bridges.
The Piscataqua Bridge connects Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with Kittery, Maine, and carries tens of thousands of vehicles every day.
Attorney General John Formella said in a news release that the man appears to have killed the woman overnight at a home in Troy, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away in western New Hampshire, then driven to the bridge.
“Early this morning, police engaged with an adult male on the bridge, resulting in him being shot and killed. The Maine Attorney General’s Office is currently investigating this officer-involved shooting,” the news release said.
“While on the bridge, police also discovered an 8-year-old child who had been shot to death inside the man’s vehicle,” the news release said, adding that the exact circumstances “are currently under investigation.”
There is no threat to the public, and the bridge remains closed in both directions while the investigation takes place, according to a press release.
The name has not been released.
According to the Maine Department of Transportation, between 70,000 and 80,000 vehicles use the Piscataqua Bridge every day.
