Wisconsin (WJFW) – Some schools have already resumed classes, while others won’t begin classes until after the Labor Day holiday. Overall, domestic travel over the Labor Day holiday is up 9% compared to last year, but spending on domestic trips is down 2%. Gas prices are always a concern for travelers, but this year they are at $3.23 per gallon for regular, lower than the $3.57 it was at this same time last year.
“Prices have been fluctuating up and down throughout the summer due to refinery issues in the Midwest, but overall they are still lower than this time last month and lower than this time last year,” said Nick Jarmus, AAA’s public affairs director.
Jarmus also said heavy traffic is expected on Thursday and Friday and travelers should plan ahead before travelling.
“On any given day over the weekend, the best time to be on the roads is in the morning. Traffic will be better around noon. Traffic will be worse especially on Thursday and Friday from mid-afternoon through the early evening. We expect traffic to be heavier during those times,” Jarmus said.
Drivers are reminded to be courteous to emergency responders and roadside assistance personnel who are helping people in distress on the road.
“Please do not become intoxicated while driving, do not become distracted and please reduce your speed. We have seen a significant increase in speed-related accidents over the last few years so we urge everyone to watch their speed and also be mindful of emergency responders who will be out and about all weekend,” said Jarmus.
