CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Roadways and airports across the country are packed as people head home after the long holiday weekend. Gerald R. Ford International Airport has seen some of that traffic, which is expected to be a 12% increase over last year’s numbers.
A steady stream of cars and passengers flowed in and out of the airport on Sunday. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects its agents to screen more than three million people at U.S. airports on Sunday, in what is expected to be one of the busiest days of the summer.
There were some flight delays at Ford Airport, you can check all flight schedules here. Zachary Horn was leaving Ford Airport on Sunday for school and said the process of getting through the airport and onto the plane went very smoothly. He said he was stuck in traffic earlier this week on the road, but he sees it as a good sign that the area is gaining popularity.
“People have discovered what a gem Northwest Michigan is, and it’s just amazing how many people come to the state on these holiday weekends,” Horn said. “I took an early flight to try to get out before the holiday traffic came in. We’re so fortunate to be able to fly all over the country, to have an airport like we have here that’s so convenient and easy to get to.”
For motorists, it was also a busy day to hit the road. AAA said about 2.3 million Michiganders will drive 50 miles or more between June 29 and July 7. They said the best times to drive are Monday morning and afternoon. The worst times to drive according to AAA are 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.
