Tyler Perry spoke about his allegiances in the 2024 presidential election on Monday night.
“I’m going to tell you what’s important to me, and I want you to hear me loud and clear when I say it,” Perry said. The Hollywood ReporterAsked at the film’s New York premiere whether he would support Biden’s reelection, he said: Divorce in the black “What’s important to me is that America remains a democracy, free from those who try to change that or who try to gain power as dictators or kings, so I support anyone who opposes that.”
Perry endorsed Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris in the 2020 election. His less-than-specific comments come amid opposition from some in Hollywood to the president seeking a second term. Entertainment heavyweights including Reed Hastings, Abigail Disney and Rob Reiner have called on Biden to drop out of the race (though Reiner appeared to backtrack on that statement in a post on X on Monday). Many of those calling for Biden to drop out cite the president’s shaky performance in last month’s debate as their concern, and argue that Biden is too old to seek reelection.
Still, Perry’s comments reflect Democrats’ arguments that democracy is at risk in the election, with Trump saying he would be a dictator from day one. His comments also come in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling last week that gave former presidents immunity from prosecution for their official duties, a ruling that Biden and other Democrats have decried as giving the commander in chief the power to break the law.
Speaking at the film’s premiere at the Regal Times Square cinema, Perry also spoke about the lessons she learned from making a film that looks behind the divorce statistics.
“I don’t know if I learned as much as I wanted to teach,” the writer-director-producer said, “that letting go of things and not getting attached…loving someone takes them places they can’t go is so important.”
