The Supreme Court on Friday corrected the inexplicable error it made in 2019, when it refused to grant certiorari (discretionary review) to overturn the atrocious decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Martin vWoodeda case I discussed a few years ago in The American Conservative (“Lawyers are the cause of homelessness,” May/June 2022). Martin vWoodedThe Ninth Circuit struck down—across the entire western United States—all laws and ordinances prohibiting “camping” in public places on the grounds that punishing vagrants who sleep in parks, on sidewalks, under bridges, etc. amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment” in…
California considers specific safety regulations for AI companies, but faces opposition from tech companies
“These are not smaller AI models,” Wiener said at a recent legislative hearing. “These are incredibly large and powerful models that, to our knowledge, don’t exist today but will exist in the near future.”Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has touted California as an early adopter of AI and state regulation, saying the state could soon deploy generative AI tools to solve traffic congestion, make roads safer and provide tax advice. At the same time, his administration is considering new rules against AI-related discrimination in hiring practices. He declined to comment on the bill, but warned that overregulation could put the state…

As many Bay Area residents prepare for July 4th celebrations, South Bay health officials are reminding people of the dangers of illegal fireworks. His brother said AI would wipe out his side hustle, then he got fired. So he said AI wiped out his job too » TwistedSifter
AI has complicated the lives and work of all kinds of professional artists and other workers. Unfortunately, some people see this as an opportunity to be mean. But as you will see in this story, it can be satisfying later for the injured party. I do artistic commissions on the side. My brother jokes that I need a new side hustle now that AI art tools exist and no one really needs artists. I’m not a full-time artist, but those jokes annoyed me, so I told him to stop. His brother doesn’t want to rest. He doesn’t and says I…
