In a slip of the tongue during a recent radio interview, US President Joe Biden referred to himself as the “first black woman to serve alongside a black president” of the United States, apparently confusing her role with that of Vice President Kamala Harris.
This claim was made during an interview with Philadelphia radio station Wurd.
“By the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, the first Black woman, to serve with a Black president, proud to be the first Black woman on the Supreme Court,” Biden said in the interview, according to a social media post on X.
In this context, Biden should have been referring to Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, who made history with their respective elections in 2008 and 2020. Obama became the first black president, while Harris became both the first black vice president and the first woman to hold the office. Biden had also served as vice president during the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017.
Regarding the Supreme Court, Biden was referring to Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black female justice appointed by his administration in 2022.
In the same interview, he also described himself as the “first statewide elected president of Delaware, when I was a kid.”
Biden represented Delaware for 36 years in the U.S. Senate, from 1973 to 2009.
‘I’m not going anywhere’: Biden
The US president’s recent gaffe comes a day after his disastrous debate with Donald Trump during the US presidential campaign, raising concerns about his ability to serve a second term.
This latest misstep also fuels lingering concerns about his cognitive decline, prompting calls for him to withdraw from the 2024 re-election race.
But despite mounting pressure, Biden reiterated his determination to stay in office at a White House Independence Day celebration on Thursday.
