Such a train could take passengers from Vienna to the Croatian coast in 14 hours, without the need to stay overnight in a hotel.
Some people prefer trains, including for transporting cars.
Car transport trains, where cars are loaded onto the train while passengers travel comfortably in the carriages, still exist in Austria.
The journey from Vienna to Croatia via Slovenia takes 14 hours and has a significantly lower carbon footprint.
“We come from Austria, not far from Vienna, and are heading by train to Spirt, Croatia,” said Bridget Rose, who was traveling with her husband on a family-sized motorbike.
“Riding a bike isn’t environmentally friendly, but taking the train is much better and I feel less guilty,” she says.
Is it expensive?
The train departs from the Austrian capital three times a week in the summer only and carried 2,500 carriages last year, four times as many as in 2021.
“It cost us about 800 euros for three people, including the baby and the car,” said another passenger. But is that too expensive?
“It seems expensive, but if you take into account two days of travelling by car and three days of staying in a hotel? If you calculate it, it comes to a loss of 60 euros, but it’s worth it.”
Traveling by train allows you to spend a comfortable night in a sleeper car instead of driving, avoiding fatigue and other risks associated with long-distance driving.
