CNBC is on a roll. NBCUniversal’s financial network has unveiled CNBC Sport, a new channel dedicated to the vast world of sports news. And they’ve recruited a star journalist from the industry to join the team. Michael Ozanian will be CNBC Sport’s lead sports reporter after nearly 30 years at Forbes, where he was best known for his coverage of team valuation.
“I am extremely honored to join CNBC and be a part of the CNBC Sports team,” Ozanian told TVNewser. “I am very excited to bring my knowledge and experience to an already great team.”
In addition to continuing to provide data-driven rankings, Ozanian’s program on CNBC Sport will include breaking news and analysis of big moves in the sports world, from franchises bringing on new sponsors to securing major media deals.
In addition to Ozanian’s hiring, CNBC reported that media reporter Alex Sherman will be elevated to the rank of media and sports journalist, while Brewer of the Countess will cover sports betting for the vertical. Additionally, Scott Wapner will interview sports business leaders and Jessica Golden will report and produce sports content for CNBC Sport.
“Sport has never been in the spotlight, with more money at stake than ever before,” KC SullivanCNBC President and CEO, said in a statement. “CNBC Sports will provide the highly engaged sports audience and those looking to invest in this growing industry with a trusted destination for analysis, updates and insider information to help them get in on the action.”
The launch of CNBC Sport is another sign of how sports continues to flex its muscles in the media industry. Puck News has added veteran sports journalist, Jean Ourandto its schedule earlier this year and streaming services like Netflix are making headlines by booking NFL games.
