With another round of high temperatures in the forecast, Sacramento restaurants and bars that mostly have outdoor seating are learning to adapt to the heat. Ernesto Delgado, owner of La Cosecha in Downtown Sacramento, has a large outdoor patio with limited indoor seating, which has seen business slow down due to the heat. “People don’t want to be outside so early in the morning, around this time, eight o’clock, it’s getting cold, but it’s almost too late to go out,” Delgado said. Delgado said he’s had to cut staff because of the slow business. “In the restaurant business, that’s what we do. We figure out how to do it, keep our team cool, and try to be there for our guests,” Delgado said. Across the river in West Sacramento, Drakes The Barn is also cutting hours to cope with the heat. They’re another mostly outdoor venue that’s been hit by the rising summer temperatures. “Obviously we’ve had to cut our hours a little bit because of the heat. We decided to close on Tuesday, and we’re going to be open an hour later for a few days,” said Latoya Allen, communications specialist for Drake’s The Barn. The restaurant has added drink stations throughout the property, sprayers and umbrellas. “Staying hydrated is the most important thing because you want to stay cool and make sure you stay cool outside. So we encourage drinking water at all times,” Allen said. Drake’s is also hosting more nighttime events to bring in more customers. They’ve had a night market, movies on the patio and DJ concerts after the sun goes down. Staff members like Sarah Kelly told KCRA 3 she hopes people will brave the heat and come to Drake’s. “Not that I’m used to the heat because it’s disgusting, but I know how to come prepared, so that’s the least I can do. Hopefully more people will brave the heat, too. I’ll be happy with the business,” Kelly said. See more coverage of California’s top stories here | Download our app
