Diego Magno has retired from international football at the age of 35. This doesn’t just mean the end of an era. Magno is the first player in the Americas to reach 100 caps. He will earn his 100th cap for Uruguay in 2022 against Romania in Montevideo. Two years later, he will retire after reaching 107 caps for Uruguay. Magno’s Test debut has been around for a long time, coming against Russia in 2008. His first Test start was in the second row against Brazil in 2010. He has also started at flanker and bottom eight during his career, playing in both positions against elite opponents. At the 2015 Rugby World Cup he featured as a second row substitute against Australia in Birmingham and as a flanker substitute against England in Manchester.
Magno played in two of Uruguay’s four matches at Rugby World Cup 2019 – against Georgia in Kumagaya and Wales in Kumamoto – and also featured in Rugby World Cup 2011 and 2023 qualifiers during his test career.
Mhango’s longevity in his Test career is down to a number of factors, including his desire and dedication to represent his country, his ability and ability to adapt to both the second row and the back row, and the needs of Uruguay.

Magno has played professional rugby in North and South America. First, he played for the Houston SaberCats in Major League Rugby (MLR) from 2019 to 2021, appearing in 29 games and starting 26 of them. He then returned to his home country to play for Peñarol in the SuperLiga Americana (SLAR) 2022.
In 2022, Magno won the Super Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) title as Peñarol won the first of two SLAR (now Super Rugby Americas) titles, with Magno being the try scorer in the 34–13 semi-final win. Los Cafeteros Pro 2022.
Magno’s third destination in his professional career was a combination of his first and second destinations. He returned to the United States, but not to the MLR, instead to play for the Americas Raptors of Super Rugby America in Colorado. Magno will play for the Raptors from 2023 to 2024.

In addition to his individual achievements on the field, Magno also comes from the first rugby club outside of Europe: he comes from MVCC in Montevideo, which was founded in 1861 and is the eighth oldest club in the world.
