ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Transportation reported 18 traffic fatalities while traveling over the Independence Day holiday period.

Eighteen people were killed in traffic accidents across Georgia over the Independence Day holiday. The 102-hour holiday period began on Wednesday, July 3 at 6:00 PM and ended on Sunday, July 7 at 11:59 PM.
Georgia State Police investigated 12 fatal crashes across the state. Local agencies that reported traffic fatalities over the holiday period included the Albany Police Department, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Columbus Police Department, DeKalb County Police Department, Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Henry County Police Department.
In addition to the fatal crashes, officers investigated more than 500 traffic accidents resulting in more than 500 injuries. Officers and Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) officers conducted more than 33,000 traffic stops, issued more than 19,400 tickets, more than 23,000 citations, and made 500 DUI arrests.
These accident statistics are preliminary findings and may change at any time after the holiday travel period.
