The 2024 college football season will officially begin next month. College football expert and host of the show Still the college football show, Greg McElroyalready has in mind which team is ready to make a big comeback this year. According to the former Alabama quarterback, he’s revisiting his vote for a team he selected last year for this same category: the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
“If we went there last year, why not go back? We had a very good opinion of the Texas Tech Red Raiders last year.” McElroy said“And, unfortunately, Texas Tech let us down a little bit…but there’s also a lot of momentum this year.”
“Although they have expectations, they are not as high as they were a year ago… there is some optimism around this team. The good news is Behren Morton takes over the quarterback position, OK? If you look at the quarterback dynamic last year, it was Tyler Shough and Behren Morton. Shough has now been traded to Louisville, and Morton is the guy who’s going to move on. So that’s going to be beneficial… I’m optimistic about his future at that position.
McElroy sees Texas Tech as a sneaky good team that could emerge from the shadows in the Big 12 and the conference. That won’t be an easy task, given that last year’s conference runner-up, Oklahoma State, is a heavy favorite along with conference newcomer Utah. Still, the newfound stability at quarterback should help Texas Tech rise to the top of the division, McElroy said.
The college football expert sees not only the stability of the quarterback as a plus, but also the Red Raiders’ ability to run the ball. McElroy bought the Red Raiders head coaching job Joey McGuire as a high school recruiter. He then highlighted one of the biggest high school recruits Texas Tech will likely rely on in 2024, while revealing why he thinks so highly of McGuire as a recruiting coach.
“They also have a top-notch receiver, Micah Hudsonwho is a consensus All-American high school player; that’s important,” McElroy said.[He] should be one of the best receivers on his team [from] first day. You also look at Joe McGuire’s ability to recruit… Remember, Joey McGuire [is] highly sought after as a [former] “He’s a high school coach in the state of Texas, so he’s as connected to the high school recruiting world as you can get. But he’s also done a good job in the portal market. And we already know they’re a team that’s going to be able to run the ball. So I’m very optimistic about Texas Tech next year; he’s kind of flying under the radar.”
Texas Tech will kick off its 2024 season with a home game against Abilene Christian on Aug. 31. That will give Red Raiders fans a chance to see what their team has to offer this season and whether McElroy is right this time around in terms of teams returning from the season.
