With the Olympics coming up later this month and the quest to reclaim the America’s Cup beginning in late August, the Museum of Sailing and the National Sailing Hall of Fame invite Hall of Fame sailor and Emmy Award-winning television commentator Gary Jobson to break down the highly anticipated competitions at the museum on July 18.
Its presentation will take place at the Sailing Museum on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.) located at 365 Thames Street in Newport. Tickets are on sale at thesailingmuseum.org.
Jobson, who will cover the Olympics for NBC starting with the first Olympic race a week later in Marseille, will give a presentation focusing on America’s prospects at the Olympics and America’s Cup this year, analyzing the team’s strength against our international rivals.
The United States is sending 13 athletes in nine different categories to compete in Marseille, France. The U.S. team has been training for three years for the Games. The museum is engaging with four of the Olympians through a letter-writing campaign leading up to the opening ceremony. Four members of the team—Lara Dallman-Weiss, Daniela Moroz, Stephanie Roble, and Hans Henken—have agreed to correspond with the children through postcards and videos.
New York Yacht Club challenger American Magic has assembled a top-notch team of sailors and designers to bring the Cup back to the United States. Five challengers from France, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland and the United States will compete to take on the New Zealand defender.
Jobson raced with three America’s Cup crews in Newport between 1977 and 1983. He covered nine America’s Cups for ESPN and NBC between 1983 and 2013, and he has covered the Olympics seven times for NBC since 1988.
