Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, known on social media as “The Liver Doc,” shared on X his reaction to a viral podcast in which Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath discussed the alcohol industry in India with Abhishek Khaitan, Minakshi Singh, Shuchir Suri, and Suraj Shenai. Philips criticized Kamath and accused him of glorifying the alcohol business by “equating it with good medical intervention.” Additionally, he spoke of treating patients with “alcohol use disorder and associated acute liver disease” almost daily.
“So far so good. Alcohol is a good business, a business that bleeds the lives of others. It makes money for governments through taxation and monopolies, enriches the bank accounts of those behind the industry (like this group at the Round Table) and makes barons of those who sell well,” writes the Liver Doc.
“But when these businessmen start glorifying their alcohol business as a ‘good medical intervention,’ that is clearly health misinformation. That is why I must continue to discuss this absolutely absurd myth that ‘alcohol in moderation is good for you’ and the absolutely absurd warning that supports that myth, which they call ‘drink responsibly,’” he wrote. Furthermore, he stated that “claiming that drinking alcohol in moderation is a good thing is actually a crime.”
“Patients and families are struggling to make ends meet to get adequate health care because alcohol has wiped out their savings. And by the time they find the funds to get things done, the patient is already on a ventilator and suffering from multiple organ failure,” he wrote of treating patients with alcohol-related health problems.
In the following lines, he talks about how alcohol affects a person’s body and cases of drunk driving that resulted in horrific accidents.
“Podcast discussions like this don’t help anyone here. Please do something that actually helps people here. Do something good for society, instead of doing stupid things like this. No one asked for such a crazy podcast topic. It’s irresponsible. The whole team,” he added as part of his X-rated post.
Take a look at his part here:
A few days earlier, the Liver Doc had responded to a post by Samantha Ruth Prabhu in which she recommended nebulizing hydrogen peroxide to treat viral infections. It had lambasted the actress and called her “health and science illiterate.” The actress later shared an explanation for her post, but the Liver Doc responded by accusing her of “playing the victim card and supporting more alternative practices.”
As of now, Nikhil Kamath has not responded to Liver Doc’s message. This copy will be updated if and when the billionaire decides to share his views.
