Mazda is Another Hybrid The lineup for 2025 will include the CX-50 crossover, which will come equipped with a hybrid powertrain borrowed from an unlikely source.
According to Mazda, the CX-50 Hybrid is designed based on Toyota’s hybrid system, which combines a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder, hybrid battery, three electric motors, a CVT and an all-wheel-drive system. The result is 219 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque on regular fuel. Mazda says this performance allows the CX-50 Hybrid to achieve 38 mpg, a 40 percent improvement in fuel economy over the non-hybrid CX-50.
The CX-50 Hybrid can be distinguished from other CX-50s by slightly different styling features: different wheels, a unique front bumper, a Hybrid-specific red interior option and “Hybrid” badging on the front fenders.
According to Mazda, the company’s engineers specially tuned the CX-50 Hybrid with a focus on throttle response and driving dynamics. The CX-50 Hybrid also offers additional drive modes, including Power and Trail. If towing is required, the vehicle has a 1,500-pound load rating. Mazda even thought about where to place the hybrid battery, opting to place it at the rear of the floor so it doesn’t interfere with cargo space.
Mazda places the CX-50 Hybrid trim in the middle of its lineup, above the naturally aspirated Premium and Premium Plus trims and below the Turbo trim. Buyers can choose from Preferred, Premium and Premium Plus trims. Pricing for the CX-50 Hybrid Preferred starts at $33,970, the CX-50 Hybrid Premium at $37,400 and the CX-50 Premium Plus at $40,050, excluding delivery charges. The 2025 CX-50 Hybrid is expected to arrive in dealerships later this year.
