Nio has announced that it will officially release its new in-car operating system, SkyOS, and the company will also be releasing the second generation of the Nio Phone.
Nio (NYSE: NIO) today announced that it will hold the Nio IN 2024 Innovation Day event on July 27 in its headquarters in Shanghai.
According to a short statement from the company, the company will then share its practices and thinking on artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart electric vehicles (EVs), and officially launch SkyOS, NIO’s new vehicle operating system.
Nio didn’t say much more than that details would be announced at the event.
The EV maker held its first Nio IN event on September 21, 2023, to showcase its research and development results and launch the first Nio Phone.
Nio unveiled SkyOS at the Nio IN 2023 event last year, when the company described it as China’s first smart EV operating system.
SkyOS is Nio’s full-domain operating system, which was announced at the time to build a “1+4+N” technology cluster covering many areas including vehicle control, intelligent driving, cockpit and mobile connectivity.
The 4 represents the four subsystems.
SkyOS-M is a secure, reliable and real-time operating system built on a microkernel.
SkyOS-L is a lightweight and reliable real-time operating system.
SkyOS-R is a high-performance operating system built for complex and rich application scenarios.
SkyOS-C is a highly customized operating system based on Android.
Nio’s first generation platform, NT 1.0, enabled the mass production of some of the SkyOS middleware, while the second generation, NT 2.0 platform, enabled the mass production of SkyOS-L.
The company had announced last year that a fully featured SkyOS would be available on Nio’s next-generation NT 3.0-based platform.
Nio also plans to launch the second-generation Nio Phone at Nio IN 2024, and the device received China Compulsory Certification (CCC) certification on July 17, paving the way for its rollout.
On July 14, Nio showed off the chassis features of its executive flagship sedan, the ET9, in a new video, teasing the imminent arrival of the next-generation Nio Phone.
