The first of these agreements comes at a time when both companies face regulatory scrutiny over the safe and ethical use of AI technology.
The agreement will give the U.S. AI Safety Institute access to key new models from both OpenAI and Anthropic before and after their public release.
The agreement will also enable joint research to assess the capabilities of AI models and their associated risks.
“We believe this institute will play a key role in defining U.S. leadership in responsible artificial intelligence development, and we hope that our collaboration will provide a framework upon which the rest of the world can build,” said Jason Kwon, chief strategy officer at OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
“These agreements are just the beginning, but they mark an important milestone in responsibly managing the future of AI,” said Elizabeth Kelly, director of the National AI Safety Institute.
The lab, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will also work with the UK AI Safety Laboratory to provide feedback to companies on potential safety improvements.
