ROCHESTER, NY — Independence Day falls on Thursday, and many people are planning to celebrate with vacations. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for a busy travel season.
The TSA says it usually screens 2.5 million people across the country. But since last month, that number has increased by hundreds of thousands each day, and some travelers like Tyler Miles have noticed.
News10NBC’s Antonina Tortorello went to Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport to speak to travelers to see if they were affected.
“Traveling to Orlando is very busy at this time, that’s where we were going and coming back was very busy because families are connecting and meeting up for the holidays,” Miles said.
Others, like Marcus Hill, aren’t so enthusiastic. “Was it more crowded than usual? No, I wouldn’t say that,” Hill said.
Hill said he hasn’t had much trouble with the crowd, but he’s taken precautions to be safe.
“We booked pretty early to make sure we could get here,” Hill said.
On the other hand, Miles says that to ensure a stress-free flight, he planned his trip before the holiday weekend.
“I honestly knew the Fourth of July week would be busy, so booking a week or two in advance allowed us to get to our destination a little faster and with less traffic,” Miles said.
The TSA recommends being proactive like Miles and expecting lots of travel.
“The lines were very long, I recommended arriving at the airport two or three hours in advance,” Miles said.
If you’re traveling this holiday season, the TSA reminds you to be prepared for security screening and arrive at the airport early before your flight.
With July 4 just two days away, highways will soon be packed with people heading out to celebrate Independence Day.
News10NBC’s Antonina Tortorello spoke to experts about what you should do to prepare for the extra traffic.
This holiday season, many people will be hitting the road to visit friends and family, but before you go, there are a few things you should know.
Emily Baumbach packed her bags and headed to Cayuga Lake. The first stop, and perhaps the most important, was the gas station.
“You don’t want to run out of gas, you’re not going to have air conditioning in your car, so typically the threshold is more than a quarter tank,” said AAA employee Todd Ingrham.
AAA says you should also check your tire pressure and car battery before you leave.
Emily isn’t the only one hitting the road this week. AAA expects more than 60 million people to do so as well, as traffic will be higher during this time. AAA says it’s important to plan your trip in advance to avoid stress.
“Leave early, try not to leave during peak hours,” Ingrham said.
AAA says the earlier the better when it comes to traveling, with any time before 10 a.m. being good.
“As well as making sure everything is working well in your car, you should also check the weather forecast for the day and even make a road trip checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything.
