Things to know about Ron DeSantis:
DeSantis represented Florida’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2012 to 2018, and then won the Florida gubernatorial election in 2018 with the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
A staunch MAGA conservative, DeSantis is a culture warrior in the same vein as former President Trump.
Before entering the Republican primary, he was widely seen as an alter-ego of President Trump and then as an alternative to him, but he dropped out of the race in January after a disappointing performance in the Iowa caucuses and relentless personal attacks from President Trump that were largely unchallenged.
DeSantis is in third place in the Republican primary delegate count with nine, ahead of Nikki Haley’s 97 and Trump’s 2,268.
“Our border is a disaster, our cities are overrun with crime, our federal government is making it harder for families to make ends meet, and our president is suffering. But decline is a choice, success is attainable, and freedom is worth fighting for,” DeSantis said in announcing his 2023 presidential candidacy, summarizing the key points of his policy platform.
On Tuesday night, the theme was much the same, but this time Trump was named as the man who could stem the tide. “We need a commander in chief who can lead 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he said. “America cannot afford another four years of Bernie’s Weekend President.”
