Spanish prosecutors said Thursday they are investigating Facebook owner Meta on suspicion of violating data protection laws by using user data to train its AI program.
Meta had already announced last month that it was suspending the use of this data for training its generative artificial intelligence service in the European Union, following complaints in 11 countries.
Prosecutors at Spain’s Supreme Court said in a statement that they had received a “massive” number of complaints about the matter from users of Facebook and Instagram, another popular social media platform owned by Meta.
Users complained that “information shared in its products and services… will be used by Meta to develop and improve its AI,” the statement said.
She added that prosecutors were seeking to protect users’ “personal data” and would consult the Spanish data protection authority on possible measures.
