The following was reported by Nate Evans, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations:
As head of the U.S. delegation to the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield hosted a talk today at the U.S. Permanent Mission to the United Nations entitled, “Bringing Technology to the Table: Leveraging Private Sector Innovation to Improve Food Security,” with participants including African Union member states, other G20 members, Google’s Head of International Organizations Melike Kurila, Inari’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs Emily Negrin, and Bayer AG’s Vice President of International and Multilateral Affairs Helga Flores Trejo. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations Michelle Sison co-moderated the discussion with Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield.
The dialogue focused on leveraging private sector technology and innovation to advance Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger – by addressing food security challenges such as climate change. Participants stressed the importance of strengthening public-private partnerships to accelerate action to end hunger, highlighting, for example, the potential of cutting-edge technologies to promote sustainable and resilient agriculture.
Throughout his tenure, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield has provided leadership to put hunger and food security at the center of the UN Security Council agenda, and in the past three years alone, the United States has provided more than $20 billion to combat food insecurity, underscoring America’s commitment to this critical issue.
