Infielder Cade McGehee was selected in the ninth round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Monday, becoming the second player from the Texas Tech baseball program to be selected.
The St. Louis Cardinals selected the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Tucson native with the 261st overall pick, a pick worth $198,000.
McGee spent his first two years of college at Gonzaga University before transferring to Texas Tech last season. With the Bulldogs, McGee was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and was named a Freshman All-American by Baseball America in 2022. He started all 20 games he played in in 2023, pitching one inning and coming one triple shy of the cycle against the Red Raiders on Feb. 20 in Lubbock.
McGehee, who played in 57 games this season at Texas Tech, started in 56 games and batted .282 with a 1.030 OPS, 15 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .580 slugging percentage. He also showed good hitting ability at the plate, being hit by pitch 23 times this season. He also led the team in walks (37) and on-base percentage (.450).
Two former Red Lazers players were also selected on Monday: Kenny Molina was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 215th overall pick in the seventh round, while the Boston Red Sox selected catcher Hudson White with the 267th overall pick.
White and Molina both transferred to Arkansas last year and spent last season with the Razorbacks. White batted .297 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs. Earlier in the day, Kevin Bazzell, who took over as catcher at Texas Tech after White’s departure, was selected early in the third round.
Molina went 4-2 with a 4.47 ERA in 13 starts for Arkansas, striking out 81 batters in 58 1/3 innings.
