One of the most complicated parts of any NHL season is the amount of travel a team must undertake, and the Dallas Stars find themselves at a disadvantage going into the 2024-25 season. Following their run to the Western Conference Finals, the Stars will travel the most distance of any team in the NHL.
According to Twitter’s TJStats, the Stars are scheduled to travel 56,700 miles over the course of their 82-game regular season. As one of the more remote teams in the league, the Stars typically travel significant distances, but this season they will travel significantly more than any other team.
Falling in second place are the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, with 51,100 miles.
The Western Conference, with its cities spread out over a wider area, typically has a heavier travel schedule than the Eastern Conference: Eight of the 10 teams with the most travel are from the Western Conference.
The Panthers and fellow Florida State team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, have the heaviest road load in the Eastern Conference.
The Arizona Coyotes have relocated and are now the Utah Hockey Club, but they will have to travel quite a distance in their first year. Utah traveled 48,700 miles in their first year and are ranked fifth.
Due to the density of teams in the eastern US, Eastern Conference teams have far less travel concerns: the 10 teams with the least travel are all Eastern Conference teams, including seven of the eight teams in the Metropolitan Division.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will have the shortest travel distance for the 2024-25 regular season, at 31,700 miles.
Each NHL team plays each other at least twice during the season, which means travel time is high for every team, but the numbers change from year to year due to small changes in schedules between conferences.
