Industry disruption
Leanne asks Hanan where she thinks AI could potentially take us: “What do you see the industry looking like in 3-5 years? Especially since you’re in the market, you’re dealing with different technology providers, you’re seeing and hearing different things, there’s innovation happening. So I thought we’d start there in this episode. I’d love to hear your thoughts.”
Hanan replied. “Our generation has seen three big disruptions since the early 2000s. I think the first one was the search disruption, when Google came on the scene and displaced all the content portals that dominated the internet at the time.
“Then search went mainstream and became the operating system of the internet. The second disruptive change was social media. So it started around 2004 and really picked up steam around 2007. The third was the smartphone in 2008, with the introduction of the iPhone and the app ecosystem. I think all three of those combined are still smaller in scale than the generative AI that’s happening now.”
AI – a big change?
Hannan continues: “Obviously, I don’t pretend that I know what the future holds or that I understand all the implications of AI, but we absolutely have to accept that AI is real and it’s going to have major impacts.
“IThis is not something that can be ignored or brushed off. It will change everything. It has already changed a lot. In terms of our industry, I think there are two big areas that will be impacted by AI. The one that immediately comes to mind is publishing and what AI can and is doing to digital publishing.
“That means content creation. Until very recently, the vast majority of content on the internet was created by humans, and probably still is. But that will very likely no longer be the case soon. The future of content creation and generation is not human. That’s a fundamental, major change.”
The future of affiliate marketing and advertiser buyouts
Lee-Ann asks Hanan how he sees the future of affiliate marketing and advertiser buyouts in the channel changing.
Hannan commented: “I mentioned earlier that GenAI is impacting two key areas in our industry. The first is publishing, which I think we’ve covered in some depth. The second is our channels themselves – the actual affiliates, the affiliate networks, the platforms and within our own industry. I think the key word is automation. I’m already seeing it. We’re already seeing it in other industries, like PPC.
“There’s no denying that GenAI brings great efficiencies. As I said last time, how I A friend of mine set up a PPC campaign that would normally take him 10+ days to set up. I set it up in 45 minutes and the results were amazing. So I think we’re going to see a huge increase in automation that will change a lot of the more mundane and mundane aspects of our day-to-day work as affiliate marketers and affiliate operators.”
