With advances in artificial intelligence happening at breakneck speed, it can feel like we’re all stuck in a race with no time to stop and catch our breath. So on days like these, it’s good to remember that, just like humans, there are hilarious underachievers out there.
The best of the moment is this fascinating collection of multi-limbed, anti-gravity gymnastics routines, in which athletes grow extra arms and legs, float in mid-air, flip around and seem to bend reality itself as the apparatus morphs and lengthens beneath them. But it’s best to just watch…
Moving bodies seem to be a real challenge for some AI models. Take for example video creator Luma AI, who proves that he has certainly never seen a manatee in his (we assume) long years of training. Here is his rendition of a manatee floating in space framed by shooting stars…
A “manatee” adrift in space
Not to be outdone, here we find Luma once again struggling in a murky marine environment, in an attempted sword fight between two narwhals with their tusks. What we see instead looks like an orca being skinned by an invisible butcher.
“Narwhal” fight
Still, we’ve come a long way since we first saw Will Smith eat a bowl of spaghetti. Just over 12 months later, we’re seeing creations like this one below.
It may not be perfect, but it’s certainly not that feverish nightmare of our recent past…
Will Smith eats spaghetti and meatballs
One can’t help but think that we’ll miss those magnificently shitty early days once these models become too good to be laughed at.
