Airline rating company Skytrax has released its list of the world’s best low-cost airlines for 2024.
AirAsia has been named the world’s best low-cost airline for 15 consecutive years.
Allegiant Air is the highest-ranking US airline on the list.
AirAsia has been named the world’s best low-cost airline by travellers surveyed by travel industry rankings firm Skytrax.
Skytrax published the results of its latest survey in June as part of the World Airline Awards 2024, which named Qatar Airways the world’s best airline.
Low-cost carriers from Europe and the UK occupy nine of the top 20 spots in the Skytrax rankings, which are compiled using feedback from travellers from more than 100 countries on more than 350 airlines.
Leading US low-cost airlines such as Southwest, Spirit and Frontier failed to make the top 20.
Here’s a closer look at the world’s 20 best low-cost airlines, according to Skytrax:
20. Sun Country Airlines
Sun Country operates a fleet of Boeing 737s from its base in Minneapolis to leisure destinations throughout the US, Caribbean and Central America.
Sun Country is the 89th ranked airline in the list of the 100 best airlines in the world according to Skytrax.
19. JetStar Asia
Jetstar Asia is a subsidiary of Australian low-cost airline Jetstar Airways headquartered in Singapore, which is also part of Qantas.
18. Allegiant Air
Allegiant Air is the highest-ranking US-based low-cost carrier on the list, coming in at number 18. The Las Vegas-based leisure carrier operates a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft, although its long-awaited Boeing 737MAX fleet is expected to arrive this year.
17. JetSMART Airlines
Ultra low-cost carrier JetSMART operates a fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft to destinations throughout South America from its headquarters in Santiago, Chile.
16. SKY Airlines
Sky Airlines has won the award for best low-cost carrier in South America. This is the fourth time the Chilean airline has won the award.
15. Jetstar airlines
Jetstar, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qantas, was named the top low-cost carrier in Australia/Oceania. Jetstar operates a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft and Boeing 787 Dreamliner wide-body jets.
14. Euro Wings
Eurowings is the low-cost subsidiary of Germany’s Lufthansa Group. It operates a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft to destinations across Europe and the Middle East.
13. Jet2.com
Jet2 is a British low-cost airline operating scheduled and chartered flights to tourist destinations across Europe.
12. flyDubai
FlyDubai is Dubai’s leading low-cost airline.Its fleet consists solely of Boeing 737 aircraft. By 2023, the airline launches lie-flat business class suite on his ship new Boeing 737MAX aircraft.
11. EasyJet
EasyJet is the UK’s top-rated low-cost airline according to the latest Skytrax rankings.
10. Ryanair Airlines
Dublin-headquartered Ryanair is arguably the world’s most famous low-cost airline, best known for its rock-bottom fares and frugal business practices. The Irish airline is also one of the world’s largest operators of the Boeing 737.
9. Iberia Express
Iberia Express is the low-cost airline subsidiary of Iberia, the national airline of Spain. As such, it is one of the airlines that is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG) along with British Airways, Aer Lingus, and another Spanish low-cost airline, Vueling.
8. Baltic air
AirBaltic operates a fleet consisting exclusively of the Airbus A220. The Latvian low-cost carrier was one of the first airlines in the world to adopt the Canadian jet and remains one of its largest operators.
7. Sailing
Vueling is Spain’s largest low-cost airline. Like the country’s national carrier, Iberia, Vueling is a subsidiary of IAG along with British Airways and Aer Lingus.
6. Nila
IndiGo is India’s top low-cost carrier and one of the world’s largest operators of Airbus A320 aircraft. In 2023, the airline began experimenting with long-haul international flights with a pair of Boeing 777-300ERs leased from Turkish Airlines.
5. French Transavia
Transavia France is the low-cost subsidiary of Air France-KLM Group.
4. Flying
Saudi Arabia’s Flynas is the Middle East’s highest-ranked low-cost carrier in the Skytrax rankings. Founded in 2007, the airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft.
3. Volotea
Spain’s Volotea is the highest-ranked of the nine European airlines on the list, operating a fleet of Airbus A320s on flights throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.
2. Scooter
Scoot Singapore is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines that provides low-cost flight services. The airline has won the award for the world’s best long-haul low-cost airline.
1. AirAsia
For 15 consecutive years, AirAsia has been the world’s top low-cost carrier. The Malaysia-based airline and its subsidiaries across Southeast Asia operate an Airbus fleet.
