Davide Benaria
Who better to develop superyachts for the next generation than up-and-coming talent?
Italian designer Davide Benaglia has unveiled an innovative 220-foot vessel that caters to the needs of young, digitally natives. The industry newcomer developed the aptly named Hype-R for Feadship’s Young Designer of the Year Award. Entrants, all under the age of 28, were asked to design a “futuristic” vessel featuring environmental innovation, cutting-edge technology and a practical layout. Though Benaglia didn’t win the competition (Indonesia’s Pradipta R. Hakim took home the top prize), his concept is still intriguing.
The Hype-R boasts a sleek, minimalist look inspired by video game controllers and other gear. The yacht also features flowing lines and dramatic curves reminiscent of sports cars. “My design language is heavily influenced by car designs, particularly those of famous masters who made history, such as Pininfarina and Giugiaro,” Benaglia said in a statement. “Technology products also inspire my designs.”
At nearly 37 feet long and with a total volume of 1,300 tons, Hype-R offers plenty of space to relax and have fun on board. Benalia says the layout has been meticulously designed to ensure each space serves a specific function. For example, the sundeck is reserved exclusively for the owner, and includes a suite with a luxurious living area and a private study for working remotely while at sea. Additionally, the yacht features two staterooms and two VIP staterooms, accommodating up to eight guests.
The exterior also features different zones: the upper deck, with its dreamy sunset lounge and romantic arches, is perfect for lounging; conversely, the modular beach area aft can be used as a cinema, disco or a quiet lounge by the water. The aft deck also features a striking asymmetrical pool cascading over two levels and a folding platform that can be opened up when required to increase the space.
The Hype-R is, of course, packed with innovative features to appeal to tech-savvy sailors, including cutting-edge entertainment equipment and a high-tech hybrid propulsion system. The diesel-electric set-up enables the yacht to achieve a top speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
This is truly a superyacht for the next generation.
