Former President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign on Sunday sent out an appeal to a GoFundMe fundraiser that has raised more than $2.4 million for victims of the shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania in less than 24 hours.
“From Trump: DON’T BE AFRAID. What matters most is that we are united,” the text to supporters read, along with a link to the fundraiser.
Meredith O’Rourke, Trump’s top financial official, is listed as the organizer of the GoFundMe fundraiser. As of Sunday afternoon, $2,464,550 had been raised. The initial goal was $1 million.
Law enforcement said at least one person was killed in the assassination attempt on Trump. Two others were critically injured, State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens told reporters Saturday night. All three were adult males. There was no immediate information about the victims, including the fatality.
Trump spoke in Butler, Pennsylvania, at his final rally before Republicans gather in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention. After shots rang out, Secret Service agents rushed to the stage to protect the former president. Trump said he was hit by a bullet that grazed his ear.
“Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as only God prevented the unthinkable from happening,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday morning, referring to how the bullet came within inches of hitting him in the head.
Several prominent Trump supporters have donated to the fundraiser. Musician Kid Rock contributed $50,000, and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy contributed $30,000.
A request for comment sent to a Trump campaign representative was not immediately returned.
