Political commentator Tucker Carlson, speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, said GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is anything but self-serving.
The former Fox News anchor shared a conversation he had with Trump after Saturday’s assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally, in which the former president told Carlson he was surprised the crowd didn’t flee.
“My first thought was, of course they didn’t run. His courage inspired them. Courage in leaders inspires people,” Carlson said. “My second thought was, ‘Is this the selfish guy I’ve been listening to for nine years?'”
Carlson was an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump on the Fox News show “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” which he hosted for several years until his contract expires in 2023.
Carlson’s relationship with Trump has been more complicated in recent days. Writings by Carlson critical of the former president were uncovered in a defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against Fox News over its reporting after the 2020 presidential election. But Carlson told WABC that he explained the contents of those writings to Trump, and they appear to get along well now.
The Republican National Convention is running through Thursday in Milwaukee, with former President Donald Trump scheduled to formally accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 election on Thursday.
