The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team will look very different next season. Remember all those transfers in March after the 2023-24 season ended? Some felt the sky was falling for head coach Mike Young, and he should be fired immediately.
The truth is much simpler: Welcome to the current era of college sports. After each season, players operate as free agents, selling their services to other teams, while other schools “recruit” veteran players behind the scenes. It’s worse in basketball than in football, because the rosters are much smaller. Virginia Tech wasn’t the only team hit hard this spring.
The question was how Young would respond. He was aggressive. The Hokies got several trades through the portal, including one they had already lost after he got more NIL money elsewhere. Sorry, that’s the truth.
Tech’s 2024-25 roster is now set. And if you haven’t been paying attention recently, you probably recognize only a few players from last season’s roster: Mylyjael Poteat, Brandon Rechsteiner, Jaydon Young and Patrick Wessler.
Virginia Tech recently announced the team’s jersey numbers for next season. Before you ask, Poteat (No. 34) and Wessler (No. 5) are not included because they have not changed numbers.
Here’s a look at the new jersey numbers, including number changes for Rechsteiner and Young. The list also includes VT’s freshman class.
