The Virginia Tech Hokies got the holiday season off to a flying start Monday, landing their biggest recruit yet. Four-star receiver Matthew Outten committed to the Hokies over fellow finalists Penn State, Syracuse and Maryland.
This is a massive recruiting win for head coach Brent Pry and receivers coach and recruiter Fontel Mines. Outten was at the top of Virginia Tech’s rankings, and beating out Penn State for a player the university desperately wanted was huge. Outten’s commitment was similar to the recruitment of Keylen “Brodie” Adams last summer. Adams, the top receiver — and arguably the best player in the state — chose the Hokies over a host of other interested schools, including Alabama, Ohio State and others.
Norcom, who stands 6 feet 11 inches and weighs 200 pounds, plays at IC Norcom in Portsmouth and is ranked the No. 6 overall player in Virginia and the No. 139 player in the country for 2025, according to 247Sports.
If you watch Outten’s highlights, you’ll see a player who looks like he could contribute on Day 1 for the Hokies. He has good size and speed and is electric with the ball in his hands. Outten plays defensive back and kick returns and is also a track star at Norcom.
The Hokies have an impressive number of receivers right now and in the future. Outten is the second receiver the Hokies have signed for 2025, joining Jayden Anderson of Green Run (Virginia Beach). Last year, in addition to Adams, the Hokies also signed Chanz Wiggins. Tech will lose its top four receivers after this upcoming season (Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane and Stephen Gosnell), so there will be plenty of playing time available in 2025.
Another great day for the Hokies.
Welcome home, Matthew.
